Why a Jamaican boblseigh fundraiser in greenwich?
Good Question mon!
The story behind the Greenwich Jamaican Jam
One of the Jamaican Bobsled Team’s biggest fans happens to live in Greenwich - an outdoorsy Dutch businessman who will occasionally let slip that he’s really Jamaican.
Eyebrows inevitably rise.
But while Louis Van Leeuwen is certainly no Bob Marley, he's genuinely Jamaican - both by birth and heart and soul. His Dutch parents fled Nazi Europe by boat and were welcomed in Jamaica just as Janette Van Leeuwen was due to give birth. Van Leeuwen's deep gratitude drives his desire to give back to his island home.
For Van Leeuwen, (founder of Curry & Kingston Cabinetry & Greenwich Construction) giving back means hosting a Jamaica Bobsleigh Foundation fundraiser for the fourth year in a row - the coolest event in Greenwich, according to everyone who has ever been!
This year's Greenwich Jamaican Jam will be held at Riverside Yacht Club on Saturday, June 2 from 4-8 pm. And it's going to rock. This unique party is chock full of Jamaican style food and entertainment, bobsleigh team members to mingle with, and the chance to climb inside, and possibly get stuck in, an actual bobsled.
While there will be both silent and live auctions, this is NOT your ordinary ‘gala’. Entertainment includes event MC Devon Harris, an original member of the 1988 team (the inspiration behind "Cool Runnings") and hours of steel band music for your dancing pleasure.
This year we're featuring a hot band on the scene, the Talking Dreads, led by Jamaican born Mystic Bowie. Guests should come dressed 'island style' and ready to get their groove on.
Says Van Leeuwen, “this party is one of the highlights of the summer scene in Greenwich. It’s a fun, feel-good jam and our guests always have a great time.”
This year’s fundraising effort will help the team continue to develop after the talented women’s team and men's skeleton team qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The Greenwich Jamaican JAM will fund future travel and coaching, and help team members continue to fulfill their inspirational role at home and throughout the world.
As part of the event, The Jam provides a $500 scholarship to a Greenwich High School Avid scholar of West Indies descent. Avid students are generally the first to attend college in their families and we wish to reward their hard work.
The Bobsled team's motto - Dream. Believe. Achieve. - speaks to the belief that perseverance and hard work pay off. To learn more about the team visit www.jamaicabobsled.com.
